Mae Haad Seafood is a charming local seafood restaurant nestled near the pier in Ko Tao, Surat Thani, serving up an authentic taste of Thailand’s coastal cuisine with heartwarming hospitality. This unpretentious spot is run by a sweet elderly couple who cook with passion and love, delivering dishes that capture the true essence of traditional Thai flavors.
The menu here is a seafood lover’s dream come true. Imagine sinking your teeth into a whole fried fish, fresh from the local waters that day, boasting crispy, golden skin and tender, flaky meat beneath. The garlic deep-fried fish is a standout dish, prepared to order with a perfect balance of aromatic garlic and crispiness that tantalizes the palate. Tom Yum Goong here offers a unique twist on the classic spicy-sour soup, although it might surprise you a bit—it’s a flavor worth exploring. Their stir-fried squid with chillies is tender and fresh, bursting with vibrant, bold Thai spice, while the stir-fried minced pork with Thai basil takes you on a delightful journey of savory, herbaceous depth.
For noodle enthusiasts, the Pad See Ew with prawns is unforgettable, with noodles cooked to chewy perfection and prawns that taste like miniature lobsters—each bite rich with authenticity and a harmony of flavors that instantly transport you away from the touristy crowds. Fried scuttle fish and shrimp fried rice also come highly recommended, illustrating the diverse delicacies Mae Haad Seafood offers from the ocean to your plate.
The atmosphere, although humble and slightly rustic, adds to the genuine experience of dining here. Unlike more commercialized or overly trendy spots, you get a sense of local life and the dedication of people who truly love their craft. The restaurant’s terrace offers a pleasant space that often catches the breeze, making it a lovely, airy setting to enjoy your meal away from the smoke of nearby eateries. It’s a place where you can savor the true spirit of Thai hospitality, feel the warmth of a family-run business, and enjoy food made with an honest touch.

I had a great experience here, especially with the fresh seafood. The dishes have a real Thai taste, and the flavors are unique compared to other places I've tried. Although the taste may differ from what you find elsewhere, I really enjoyed it here and would definitely recommend it for authentic Thai cuisine!

I don't know why this place isn't busier being but the peir and all. I just sat down and taken the first few bites of my meal and it's incredibly delicious. I've been craving fried scuttle fish since I arrived in Thailand weeks ago and this is by far the next best thing. I ordered no name with sea food and it's too die for. I am definitely going to come back and try their breakfast.

We spend 8 days at Koh Tao and every day after diving we went for lunch to that place. Very tasty food which is cooked freshly with passion and love. The two love their restaurant and we never got disappointed. Beside the outstanding food, you can get really tasty shakes of any fruit you like. Name it and you'll get it. We definitely will come back as soon as we are back at Koh Tao.

Good food cooked by real local Thai granny. No cannabis oil contained. Maybe only one place I didn't see any Burmese staff. I came here twice one my first day and last day since I didn't stay near the pier. The curry chicken and shrimp fried rice were amazing. If you don't like smoke, come here when nobody there or try to find a seat in the terrace, so you will be upwind and won't be disturbed by smokers.

When I stayed at koh tao for 4 nights, I went to eat every night at this lovely place. The food was really good and the Tom yum Gung helped me sweat out a cold I caught . The fried fish was the best dish tho, definitely worth trying! Sweet elderly couple running the place but business seems to have gotten harder. They really do deserve the support so at least give it a try. Every time I went there (alone) I loved talking to both of them and eating delicious seafood (garlic fried chicken with rice also top-notch)

Pad see ew with prawns was so delicious! Noodles were very authentic, much better than back in the US. Prawns tasted almost like mini lobsters. The whole fried fish was very fresh, caught locally the same day. The owners are very sweet and embodied Thai hospitality. The restaurant itself is a little run down, but I prefer to support local rather than big crowded touristy places with “vibes” but no substance.

Great food here today. We had stir fried squid with chillies and stir fried minced pork with Thai basil. Both were amazing. The squid was so fresh and tender. It was nice and clean and the family that run it although, spoke very little english were very friendly. Can't wait to go back.

The best garlic deep fried fish in Koh Tao, bone crisp! And look at garlic, it was made order to order. Tom Yum here is not what I expected. But overall it’s a nice restaurant with great view.
